Harry S Truman Lodge No. 1066 has a complex history
which we will try to explain as clearly as possible.

In 1970, the 8th Masonic District of Manhattan was comprised of 22 Blue Lodges, which were:

Algonquin Lodge No. 1056   Metropolis Lodge No. 1059
Comrade Lodge No. 1058   Paramount Lodge No. 1076
Duquesne Lodge No. 1067   Mt. Scopus Lodge No. 1075
Faith Lodge No. 1044   Trojan Lodge No. 1098
Felicity Lodge No. 1100   Progress Lodge No. 1041
Fiat Lux Lodge No. 1079   Prudence Lodge No. 1066
Habonim Lodge No. 1042    Solidarity Lodge No. 1099
Humanitas Lodge No. 1123   Valorous Lodge No. 1063
James W. Husted Lodge No. 1068   Vigilantia Lodge No. 1108
Jehoshophat Lodge No. 1080   Vulcan Lodge No. 1102
Justinian Lodge No. 1065   Zealous Lodge No. 1115

The first merger in the 8th District of Manhattan took place in 1971 between Valorous Lodge and Jehoshophat Lodge. THAT was the BEGINNING of OUR LODGE, as it is today. The new Lodge became Valorous - Jehoshophat Lodge No. 1063 until 1975, when Algonquin Lodge merged. The combined membership of the new Lodge chose the name Harry S. Truman, and the Grand Lodge of New York State assigned a new number, 1171, because we were a newly formed Lodge. Six months later, Mt. Scopus Lodge merged, without any change in our Lodge's name and number.

Sometime during the mid-seventies, Trojan Lodge, Vigilante Lodge and Faith Lodge merged to form a new Lodge known as Heritage Lodge No. 1044, (The Membership decided to keep the lowest number of the Lodges instead of getting a completely new number from the Grand Lodge.) Soon after, Zealous Lodge combined with Heritage Lodge, and Mt. Scopus joined Harry S. Truman Lodge.

By 1980, there were many more mergers in the 8th District, which have no bearing on the formation of Harry S. Truman Lodge. (We just mention this to underscore there were many other mergers in the 8th District.)

In 1988, Harry S. Truman Lodge and Heritage Lodge merged to form Truman-Heritage Lodge No. 1044. Everyone opted to keep the lower number of 1044. It stayed that way until 1997 when the leaders of Truman-Heritage and the leaders of Prudence decided to form one, united Lodge.

The new Lodge decided to keep Prudence Lodge's number, 1066, so that in some way the Prudence name and spirit would be preserved, and the combined Lodges of Truman - Heritage and Prudence would henceforth be known as Harry S. Truman Lodge No. 1066. It was decided at that time that if and when any other Lodge was to merge with us, the name would not change.

That was ten years ago (2007). Today, Harry S. Truman Lodge No. 1066
is the largest within the 8th Masonic District of Manhattan.

(Special thanks and appreciation to the R.'.W.'.Michael Hyman,
longtime Treasurer of our Lodge, for all the specifics and details.)
